I’m figuring it out, too.

But after years of working with kids, raising my own, and learning as much as I could about how they grow and think, I started noticing what actually helps: what makes them pause, reflect, or see something in a new light.

That’s what I tried to put into these cards.

Something simple you can actually use.

Light enough not to feel like homework.

But thoughtful enough to shift the way we think.

I made them because I believe parents have more influence than we think. We are there in the small in-between moments. We notice things others miss. We care in ways no one else can.

So no, these cards won’t fix everything.

But they can open up space for better conversations.

However…

Subscribe now

These Aren’t Just Conversation Starters.

They are mental workouts in disguise.

On the surface, each card offers a simple prompt -

Something you could ask on the way to school or while the pasta is boiling.

But underneath?

Each one is designed to grow:

– Clearer thinking and better questions.

Helping kids learn to spot patterns, test ideas, see things from more than one side, and pause before jumping to conclusions, all of which build stronger decision-making and problem-solving over time.

– Emotional insight and self-awareness.

Making it easier for them to name what they feel, sort out what is real from what is assumed, and stay grounded even when things feel uncertain. They learn to respod rather than react.

– Imagination and mental flexibility.

Encouraging kids to play with ideas, look at situations from different angles, learn from mistakes, and shift gears when something isn’t working, which a huge part of resilience.

– A sense of voice and agency.

Creating space for kids to think for themselves, speak up, and practice shaping ideas, not just repeating what they are told on social media or at school.

And under it all:

The kind of perseverance that grows when you are allowed to wrestle with a question and not be rushed to the “right” answer.

Why This Matters Now

Kids today live in a world of:

• More information, but less time to think

• More connection, but fewer deep conversations

• More academic pressure, but little space for meaning

• More answers, but fewer questions of their own

The result?

A lot of kids can follow instructions or ace a quiz. But when they are faced with a real decision, or asked what they care about, they freeze.

They haven’t had enough chances to wrestle with uncertainty or figure things out on their own. That kind of thinking takes time and space to get things wrong, talk it through, change your mind. It doesn’t come from cramming more facts. It grows from the conversations we have when no one is grading.

And those start at home.

Parents Are Still the Most Powerful Learning Environment

Research shows that what happens at home -

in the in-between moments -

is more predictive of long-term success than income or school quality.

Psychologists call it “the alterable curriculum of the home.” I think of it as the place where kids figure out how thinking feels. When a child feels safe to wonder out loud, question things, share half-baked ideas - that’s where real learning begins to take root.

Why These Cards Are Different

There are lots of “talk to your kid” decks out there.

Some are cute. Some go deep.

But most are built to get kids talking.

Not thinking.

This deck is different.

These cards might look simple – even silly at first.

But they are built from everything I’ve learned working with kids, teaching thinking, and being a parent myself.

Each card is meant to stretch how kids think.

Not just what they think about, but how – how they notice things, ask questions, deal with uncertainty, change their mind, reflect.

And while they are designed for kids, they have made me think better, too.

Here is the link to the Thinktopus Starter Pack; more will come soon.

Right now, this first set is best for kids aged 8–12. If you have older kids or teens, let me know - I’m already working on the next version.

Please share your thoughts, feedback, suggestions if you decide to give it a try.

Better conversations start small.

But they grow something big.

Thanks for reading Wondering Minds Substack! Whether you’re looking to challenge your kids, start a lesson with a warm-up activity, entertain a group of friends, or just want a fun brain exercise, these games are great for building creativity without the pressure. Also, thinking develops only through consistent practice - just like any other skill.

1. Odd One Out

We’ll start with a classic: Odd One Out. This game encourages players to think creatively by finding connections between unrelated things.

How to Play:
Choose three random objects. For example: a crocodile, a cactus, and a house. The goal is to figure out what unites two of the objects and why the third one doesn’t fit.
Maybe: "The crocodile and cactus are both found in nature, but the house is man-made."
Or: "The cactus and house both stay in one place, but the crocodile moves around."
You can switch it up each round and encourage players to come up with as many different explanations as possible.
<div Bad

This game is great for getting people to think about things from both sides - good and bad - and it helps to quickly flip perspectives.

How to Play:
Start by naming an event. Let’s say, "It’s raining." The next player has to say what’s good about that: "It’s great for the garden." Then the next person has to find the downside of what the last player said: "But the garden takes a lot of effort to maintain." The game continues as players keep alternating between good and bad until someone runs out of ideas. It’s a quick way to train flexible thinking and see situations from all angles!

3. Make a Story Out of 6 Words

This is one of my favorites for sparking creativity with minimal effort. It’s quick, challenging, and you can do it anywhere.

How to Play:
You only get six words to tell a story. Simple as that! For example: "Lost cat, found map, treasure hunt." Or "Phone dead, missed call, surprise visit." It’s amazing how much creativity can fit into just six words! Try giving prompts like "a mystery," "a trip gone wrong," or "a funny moment" to see where your creativity takes you. You can also try to fit your biography into just 6 words - see how challenging that is?

4. 10 Ways to Use a Certain Object

This one is a great way to turn everyday objects into a playground for your imagination.

How to Play:
Pick an ordinary object, like an umbrella, and come up with 10 different ways to use it. For example: "an umbrella can be a walking stick, a sword, a dance prop, a tent for small animals..." You can add an extra layer of fun by imposing a restriction, like "Come up with a sport where you need to use an umbrella." This really forces you to think beyond the obvious.

5. Alien Interview

This game encourages players to explain everyday things in new and creative ways.

How to Play:
One player pretends to be an alien who has never seen Earth before and asks questions about everyday objects or activities. For example, "What is a spoon used for?" The other players have to explain it in the simplest and most creative way possible.

Now it's your turn! Imagine the alien asks, "What is sleep, and why do humans need it?" How would you explain this everyday activity to someone who's never experienced it?

Why These Games Work

These games are designed to make creativity both easy and fun, while quietly developing an essential skill we rely on more often than we realize. Whether it’s spotting connections between unrelated objects or crafting a story with just six words, each game nurtures quick thinking, mental flexibility, and the ability to approach challenges from new perspectives. These aren’t just fun activities - they help us improve how we solve problems, generate new ideas, and adapt to changing situations in both everyday life and work. Best of all, they’re quick and simple to play, perfect for filling those small gaps in your day, whether you’re stuck in traffic with your child or waiting for your coffee others. But trust me, it’s worth trying. Provocation is an amazing tool to demonstrate how lateral thinking works, especially when you feel stuck trying to “question assumptions” or “think in reverse.” You might wonder, “Even if I do that, how do I get a realistic, practical idea from it?”

The beauty of provocation is that it gives you a clear, step-by-step way to take what might seem like a completely outrageous idea and turn it into something practical and useful. It actually pulls in other lateral thinking tools - like exaggeration, distortion, and wishful thinking - as a starting point, using them to nudge your thinking in new directions. This way, you can end up with solutions that are not just creative, but also genuinely innovative.

What is Provocation?

Provocation is making a statement that might seem nonsensical or unrealistic at first. The goal is to disrupt your usual thought patterns and force your mind to consider new possibilities. This process is marked by using the term "Po," which Edward de Bono introduced to indicate a provocative operation. When you introduce a Po statement, it’s not meant to be taken literally but as a way to move your thinking forward, breaking away from conventional solutions.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

The techniques you can use to generate provocations are:

Exaggeration: Amplifying an aspect of the problem to an extreme, for example, “What if everyone had to work 24 hours a day?” or “What if every meal had to be prepared in under five minutes?”

Reversing Processes: Taking the usual flow of a process and flipping it around, for example, “What if people got paid first and then did the work?” or “What if students wrote the test questions themselves before learning the material?”

Distorting Common Practices: Twisting a standard practice into something unusual or unexpected to see what new opportunities arise. For example, “What if all meetings were held in complete silence?” or “What if toys could only be played with in the dark?”

Wishful Thinking: Imagining an ideal or impossible scenario to inspire new ideas. For example, “What if cars could run on water instead of gasoline?” or “What if kids never argued?” or “What if every student loved doing homework?”

Additional techniques include:

Reframing: Looking at the problem from a completely different perspective. For example, “What if instead of seeing traffic as a problem, we viewed it as an opportunity for social interaction?” or “What if tantrums were seen as opportunities to teach emotional regulation?”

Escape: Removing a key component of the problem or scenario entirely to see what happens. For example, “What if schools did’t have teachers?” or “What if grocery stores didn’t exist?”

Substitution: Replacing one element of the problem with something else to see how it changes the situation. For example, “What if students taught the classes instead of teachers?” or “What if you swapped your commute with a daily walk?”

Combination: Merging two unrelated concepts or ideas to see what new possibilities arise. For example, “What if a phone was also a projector?” or “What if playtime and chores were combined?”

Disruption: Intentionally breaking the normal sequence or structure of a process to see what alternative paths could emerge. For example, “What if you rearranged all the furniture in your home every month?” or “What if the school day started at a different time every day?”

Inversion: Flipping the problem on its head, much like reversing, but specifically looking at the problem as if the opposite was true. For example, “What if customers paid based on how satisfied they were with the service?” or “What if instead of saving money, you had to spend a set amount each day?”

As you can see, these prompts might lead to similar ideas, and that’s totally fine - they’re just here to give your thinking a little nudge. Some of the ideas might already seem like good solutions, but most of them probably feel unrealistic or leave you thinking, “So what?” You might wonder what the point of provocations is if they just seem to lead to bizarre or unrealistic ideas. While it’s true that provocations on their own might not be immediately helpful, it all falls into place when you move to the next step - movement.

Thanks for reading Wondering Minds Substack! There are several ways to create movement, but let's start with a key method: movement via principle.

Movement via principle means extracting a fundamental idea or insight from your provocation and then working it into a more realistic solution.

How to Apply Movement via Principle:

Generate Provocations: Start with your provocative ideas that ‘solve’ the problem at hand. For example:

"What if schools didn’t have any teachers?"

"What if cars were banned from cities?"

"What if all food was free?"

Extract the Principle: Identify the core principle behind each provocation. For instance:

The principle behind "no teachers" might be self-directed learning or peer teaching.

The principle behind "banning cars" might be prioritizing sustainable, pedestrian-friendly cities.

The principle behind "free food" might focus on making healthy food accessible to everyone.

Move to Realistic Solutions: Develop practical solutions based on the extracted principles:

For "no teachers": Implement more student-led projects or use AI to guide learning paths.

For "banning cars": Designate more pedestrian zones or invest in public transport infrastructure.

For "free food": Create community gardens or subsidize healthy food options to make them more affordable.

…and if you still not tired, then…

Four More Ways of Getting Movement

Focus on the Difference: Look at how the provocation differs from reality and use that difference to generate new ideas.

Example: "What if all meetings were held standing up?" The difference here is the physical posture and how it changes the dynamic of the meeting. It could inspire the idea of creating spaces designed specifically for quick, productive meetings that don’t require sitting.

Moment-to-Moment: Simulate what would happen if the provocation were true, and explore the consequences.

Example: "What if roads could move instead of cars?" Imagine how that might change city planning, leading to ideas like modular, adaptable infrastructure.

Focus on the Positive Aspects: Identify any positive elements of the provocation and build on them.

Example: "What if unhealthy food made you sick immediately?" The positive aspect is immediate feedback, which could lead to healthier eating habits or food tracking systems.

Figure Out Special Circumstances: Consider under what conditions the provocation might make sense and how those conditions could be created.

Example: "What if restaurants only served one dish per day?" This might make sense in a setting where the focus is on reducing food waste or showcasing a chef’s creativity, such as in a small, experimental restaurant or a pop-up event.

Generating Solutions

You take the provocation and refine one of the ideas into a concrete and effective solution for your problem.

Now, let’s put this into practice. Here are a few problems for you to solve using the provocation and movement approach:

Problem: Reducing energy consumption in households.

Provocation: "What if all homes had no windows?"

Problem: Improving student engagement in online classes.

Provocation: "What if students could only attend class from a public place?"

Problem: Encouraging more people to use public transportation.

Provocation: "What if cars were only allowed on the roads one day a week?"

Problem: Making healthy eating more appealing to children.

Provocation: "What if all vegetables were invisible?"

Take these problems and use the techniques we’ve discussed to generate provocative ideas, explore movements, and then turn those insights into practical solutions. The key is to push your thinking beyond the usual limits and see where it takes you.

It is also a great tool (you can call it a game) to teach your kids or students!
<p class="button-wrapper" The main idea behind lateral thinking, a concept introduced by Edward de Bono, is to break away from the usual way we solve problems. De Bono encourages us to look at challenges from fresh and sometimes surprising angles. He believed - and that is very true - that our brains often get stuck in familiar patterns, which limit our creativity.

The term "lateral" comes from the Latin lateralis, meaning "side" or "shifted." So, to think laterally means to shift your perspective. In his concept, de Bono wanted to distinguish lateral thinking as a distinct type of thinking, separate from vertical logical thinking and horizontal imaginative thinking. Although there are dozens of tools and approaches that de Bono developed throughout his lifetime (you might have heard of the Six Thinking Hats, for instance), they all share the same mechanism: a lateral break.

Here, I’ll simplify and summarize all the main approaches with examples.

The LATERAL Framework:

1. Look Beyond:

Definition: Begin by questioning assumptions and challenging the status quo. Ask "What if?" and "Why not?" to explore alternative perspectives.

Example #1: Your kids always fight over who gets to choose the family movie. Instead of assuming they have to take turns, ask, "What if we combined everyone’s favorite genres into a movie marathon?"

Example #2: If bedtime is a constant battle, question your beliefs and habits around the bedtime routine. Start with a bedtime story, then brush teeth, and finally pajamas. The change might make the process more engaging and fun.

2. Alter Your Angle:

Definition: Approach the problem from different perspectives, including those outside your usual scope of thinking.

Example #1: You're struggling to get your kids to do their chores. Instead of trying the usual approaches, pick a random word from a book, like "jungle." Now, think about how you could turn chores into a jungle adventure. Maybe cleaning becomes a safari, where each item put away is an animal being returned to its habitat.

Example #2: Your team is stuck on a marketing idea. Grab a random object from your desk, like a paperclip. Now, brainstorm how this paperclip could inspire your campaign. Perhaps it leads to a concept about connecting customers or holding things together, sparking a new direction for your marketing efforts.

Subscribe now

3. Trigger New Connections:

Definition: Connect unrelated concepts or ideas to generate new solutions.

Example: Getting everyone ready for a family trip can feel like preparing for a big sports game. Think of each family member as a player with a specific role - packing, planning, navigating. Using this analogy can make the process more organized and fun, as everyone knows their position on the "team." You can literally assign roles and play it out.

Example for Teachers: If your students are having trouble grasping a complex concept, like ecosystems in biology, compare it to a city. In this analogy, plants and animals are like different businesses and services that rely on each other. The bees are like delivery trucks, transporting goods (pollen) to various "stores" (flowers), while trees provide the oxygen, just as infrastructure supports the city's needs. This analogy can make an abstract concept more tangible and relatable for students.

4. Exaggerate to Innovate:

Definition: Take your problem or idea to an extreme to explore exaggerated possibilities.

Example #1: Your kids are reluctant to clean their rooms. Exaggerate the situation: "What if the room were so messy that we needed a bulldozer to clean it?" This exaggeration might lead to creative incentives, like turning cleaning into a timed challenge where they "rescue" their toys before the "bulldozer" arrives.

Example #2: Your company wants to stand out in a crowded market. Exaggerate your product’s unique selling point: "What if our product could solve every problem imaginable?" While unrealistic, this exaggeration can lead to identifying the most valuable and distinctive features that truly set your product apart, which you can then emphasize in your marketing.

5. Reverse Your Thinking:

Definition: Approach the problem by thinking in the opposite direction - considering how to achieve the exact opposite of your goal to uncover hidden insights and solutions that were not on the surface.

Example #1: Your child struggles with getting up early for school. Instead of thinking about how to help them wake up earlier, ask, "How could we make them even more resistant to waking up?" You might realize that certain evening habits, like late-night screen time, contribute to the problem. By eliminating these, you can reverse the situation and make mornings easier.

Example #2: If your goal is to improve team productivity, reverse the thinking: "How could we make our team less productive?" This might bring attention to inefficiencies like long, unnecessary meetings or lack of clear communication.

6. Act on Provocation:

Definition: Use bold, provocative statements to push your thinking out of the comfort zone.

Example #1: Suppose you want to encourage more family activities. Start with a provocative statement: "What if we banned all individual activities for a month?" While this idea may seem extreme, it can result in ideas like setting up family challenges or establishing a no-tech day that brings everyone together.

Example #2: Your company needs to innovate in a stagnant market. Use provocation by declaring, "What if we gave our product away for free?" This might lead to ideas like offering a freemium model, introducing valuable add-ons, or creating a completely new pricing strategy that stands out from competitors.

7. Look Through a New Lens:

Definition: Reframe the problem to see it from a different perspective, uncovering new avenues for solutions.

Example #1: If your students aren’t completing their assignments, instead of thinking, “They’re just lazy," reframe the problem: "Why aren’t they motivated?" Maybe the assignments aren’t engaging or are too challenging.

Example #2: You’re having trouble sticking to a new fitness routine. Instead of saying, "I don’t have time," reframe the problem: "Why is my current schedule not supporting my goals?" This could lead to reorganizing your day or finding small, creative ways to incorporate exercise, like short bursts of activity during breaks.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

My favorite tool is provocation. you were just looking at it the wrong way? This happens to all of us, and it’s a reminder of how deeply ingrained our thinking patterns can be (you can also think of this as an example of cognitive inertia).

Lateral thinking is a way to break free from these patterns. It encourages us to approach problems from new and unexpected angles, leading to solutions we might not have considered otherwise.

What Are Lateral Thinking Puzzles?

Lateral thinking puzzles present scenarios that might seem confusing or impossible at first. The challenge is to ask questions that can only be answered with "yes," "no," or "irrelevant," and use these clues to piece together the full story.

These puzzles go beyond just being fun - they’re also excellent for developing several important skills:

Encourages Logical Thinking: To solve a lateral thinking puzzle, kids need to develop a strategy. This often involves asking broad questions to narrow down possibilities, which helps them think logically and systematically.

Promotes Creative Questioning: Rather than guessing randomly, children learn to ask focused, meaningful questions. This skill is crucial in both academic settings and everyday life.

Builds Active Listening: As they play, kids must pay close attention to each response. This enhances their ability to listen carefully and think critically about the information they receive.

You can find plenty of these puzzles online and in books like this one. For younger children, you can simplify the game by having them guess an object you’re hiding or thinking of by asking only “yes” or “no” questions. Another fun variation is to draw an object from an unusual perspective and ask the players to guess what it is. You can also hide part of an image or photo and ask players to guess what’s in the hidden section.

For an extra challenge, try limiting the number of questions that can be asked (e.g., "Can you guess this in 5 questions?").

Let’s Try a Puzzle Together

Here’s a classic lateral thinking puzzle to get you started:

Puzzle 1: The Cowboy and the Bartender A cowboy walks into a bar and asks the bartender for a glass of water. Without saying a word, the bartender pulls out a gun and fires it into the air. The cowboy says "thank you" and leaves. What just happened? 🤠

The guessing game could look like this:

-Was the bartender trying to scare the cowboy?

-Yes

-Was the cowboy was being rude or threatening?

-No

-Did the bartender give him the water?

-No

-Was the cowboy choking or something?

-No

-Did the cowboy have hiccups?

-Yes

Answer: The cowboy had hiccups. The bartender realized this and knew that a sudden scare might cure them, so he fired the gun. The cowboy was cured of his hiccups and left, grateful for the unconventional solution.

Another Puzzle to Challenge Your Thinking

Here’s another puzzle to challenge your lateral thinking skills:

Puzzle 2: The Hidden Shoe Before going to bed, a woman hid her shoe in a safe. Why would she do that? 👠

Hint: Think about what the woman might be worried about or trying to protect. Is it the shoe itself, or could there be something more?

Lateral thinking puzzles like these are a great way to engage your child’s mind and help them develop both creative and critical thinking skills. Plus, they’re a lot of fun to solve together!

Practical Tips

Start Simple: Begin with easier puzzles and gradually move to more complex ones as your child becomes more confident.

Encourage Discussion: After solving a puzzle, take a moment to discuss it. Ask your child what they found challenging and how they arrived at the solution.

Make It a Group Activity: Lateral thinking puzzles work great in groups, whether in the classroom or at home. Encourage kids to work together, asking questions and sharing ideas.

Tie It into Learning: Use lateral thinking puzzles to complement lessons in history, literature, or science. They’re perfect for exploring cause-and-effect relationships, character motivations, or scientific principles.

What’s Next?

In our next post, we’ll dive deeper into lateral thinking - not just through yes/no games, but also by exploring how this approach can be used to spark creativity and problem-solving in everyday life.

In the meantime, let us know in the comments if you figured out why the woman hid her shoe in the safe, or share your own favorite lateral thinking puzzles!

<a Noah Harari, who is known for his thought-provoking books like Sapiens, which takes readers on a journey through the history of humankind and challenges the way we see our world. Harari is also writing books for kids, including his just-released second volume of Unstoppable Us: Why the World Isn't Fair. During the conversation, Harari shared an example that really stuck with me - one that perfectly illustrates the importance of thinking about the consequences of our actions, a topic I touched on in my previous post about critical thinking.

Harari talked about the Agricultural Revolution. On the surface, this might seem like a great idea - it allowed us to settle down, produce more food, and build societies. But Harari points out that this decision led to many unintended consequences. While some people, like kings and pharaohs, enjoyed the benefits, for most, life became much harder. Farming brought with it poor diets, new diseases, and even large-scale wars - outcomes no one anticipated when they first started planting crops.

<a the lens of consequences. When they start to see how one decision can ripple out and create a whole series of effects, they begin to understand the bigger picture. By helping kids see how small actions can lead to significant outcomes, we’re not just teaching them about history; we’re preparing them to make thoughtful choices that will shape the future. It’s about giving them the tools to think deeper and act smarter in their own lives.

Harari reminds us that while our ancestors made the world what it is, we have the power to decide what the world will become. As he beautifully puts it, “To all beings - those gone, those living, and those still to come. Our ancestors made the world what it is. We can decide what the world will become.” This idea is at the heart of critical thinking - it’s about questioning the stories we’re told, understanding the potential outcomes of our actions, and making choices that lead to a better future.

In our daily lives, we can help kids develop critical thinking by turning everyday choices into teachable moments. When you’re deciding whether to recycle something, take a moment to talk about how that choice impacts the environment. Or, when they’re spending time on their devices, have a conversation about how technology affects our lives and society. These simple discussions can help them see the bigger picture and understand how their actions connect to the world around them.

<a class="image-link "Do you mean drawing? Writing stories?" he asked. But creative thinking goes beyond artistic endeavors - it's about approaching problem-solving with ingenuity. For example, instead of nagging your child to clean their room, you might design a game where tidying up is part of a quest. Or rather than merely thinking about how to make a horse go faster, you might invent the automobile.

As I explored different approaches like lateral thinking, TRIZ, and design thinking, I was captivated by the elegance of many solutions. Yet, hindsight reveals that not all solutions are beautiful, and even those that are may not stand the test of time. Consider the rise and fall of various technologies; what was once cutting-edge can quickly become obsolete, like the transition from pagers to smartphones.

Thanks for reading Wondering Minds Substack! Also, while we may not all become brilliant inventors, we do enhance the quality of our solutions and everyday decisions as a result.

Even though tools like ChatGPT can generate a wealth of ideas, they operate within set boundaries, and after a while, you start to notice their limits. If we, along with our children, want to fully realize our potential, we must learn to think outside these boundaries. After all, creativity isn't just about solving problems; it's also immensely satisfying. Perhaps this joy is the true essence of life.

But let’s set philosophy aside for a moment and try one practical exercise.

The Method of Focal Objects

This exercise is based on the fundamental principle of creation - combination. It’s a powerful tool for developing new ideas by merging characteristics of seemingly unrelated objects. Let’s say we want to design a new lamp. Here’s how you can approach it:

Pick Three Random Objects: Choose any three objects around you - perhaps a book, a chair, and a clock.

List Three Characteristics of Each Object: For the book, you might list "informative," "made of paper," and "ancient." For the chair, "wooden," "balanced," and "supportive." For the clock, "electronic," "loud," and "changing color."

Combine Characteristics: Now, pick one characteristic from each object to incorporate into your lamp design. Let’s choose "informative" from the book, "supportive" from the chair, and "changing color" from the clock.

Create Three Product Ideas: With these characteristics in mind, you can imagine a lamp that embodies each:

Informative Lamp: Picture a lamp that doubles as an interactive learning tool. This lamp could project information onto the walls, such as fun facts, quotes, or even educational content like vocabulary words or historical dates. The light could change based on the time of day, showing relevant information - for example, calming nature facts in the evening or motivational quotes in the morning. It’s a lamp that not only illuminates a room but also enlightens its users.

Supportive Lamp: This lamp would provide physical or emotional support. Imagine a lamp with an ergonomic base that serves as a resting spot for your hand or arm while working or reading. The lamp could also feature a gentle vibration or warming function to soothe tired muscles, making it a comforting presence on your desk. Alternatively, it could offer emotional support by softly glowing in response to ambient noise, creating a calming environment when you’re stressed.

Color-Changing Lamp: This lamp changes colors in response to specific triggers, such as the time of day, the weather, or even your mood. It could be connected to a weather app and glow blue on rainy days or warm yellow on sunny ones. Alternatively, it might have a sensor that detects your emotions through voice or touch, adjusting its color to create the perfect ambiance. For instance, it could turn a calming blue when you're feeling anxious or a vibrant orange when you're happy.

Refine Your Invention: Choose one of these ideas and think about how it could be further developed. How does incorporating these characteristics make the lamp more functional or appealing? Could this product solve a problem or fulfill a need that hasn’t been addressed before?

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

By using the Method of Focal Objects, you can transform a simple lamp into a multifunctional device that informs, supports, and adapts to its environment and user. This exercise not only fosters creativity but also encourages you to see everyday objects in a new light, opening up endless possibilities for innovation. It’s often easier to start practicing with tangible, physical objects before moving on to more complex, ambiguous problems.

Creative thinking goes beyond just finding solutions to problems; it's about enriching our lives by seeing possibilities where others see obstacles. By engaging in exercises like this, you and your children can cultivate a mindset that not only generates innovative ideas but also transforms the way you approach everyday challenges. This process of exploration and discovery helps unlock a deeper understanding of the world and your potential within it. 1456w" sizes="100vw"></picture>

In the following series of posts, I will share easy exercises and games for each group of skills that are simple to incorporate into everyday communication with your child or into a lesson plan. We'll start with critical thinking.

Critical thinking - such a buzzword right now! But at its core, it means the ability to collect and analyze information to reach a rational conclusion. These conclusions can take many forms, from understanding a complex issue, such as figuring out why your plants aren’t growing well, to realizing that your belief in a certain diet being the healthiest may need to be adjusted after discovering new scientific research that contradicts your previous understanding.

Critical thinking is made up of several essential skills, including decision-making, problem-solving, open-mindedness, research, reflective thinking, and more.

Let’s start with something I consider the most important skill: recognizing cause and effect relationships.

You can explore cause and effect with children of any age by discussing situations like:

Character Consequences: For younger children, you can use their favorite characters as examples. Imagine Winnie the Pooh deciding to eat the honey that was meant for Eeyore’s birthday. This simple (and oh-so-tempting) decision could have led to several consequences, even if they weren’t mentioned in the book. For example, Eeyore might have been sad and grumpy without his honey, leading the whole gang to go on an unexpected adventure to find a new jar. Or maybe Pooh, feeling guilty, tries to make it up to Eeyore by baking a honey cake - but ends up making a sticky mess instead! These scenarios not only spark imagination but also show how one choice can ripple out into a chain of events.

The Domino Effect: Kids often enjoy these discussions because they can see how one choice leads to another. Start with a simple decision and watch how it unfolds. For example, a student decides to skip breakfast because they’re running late. This small decision could lead to feeling tired and unfocused in class, which might result in poor performance on a quiz. Because they did poorly, they need to stay after school for extra help, which means they miss soccer practice. Now, the coach is disappointed, and the team is affected - all because of that one skipped breakfast. Kids usually love to add even more drama to the scenario, which is great because it helps them see how choices can snowball into bigger consequences.

Analyzing Real-World Scenarios: Whether it’s something in the news, history, or our everyday lives, analyzing real-world scenarios helps kids understand cause and effect. For example, exploring how the use of plastic bottles contributes to pollution can lead to discussions about the harm to marine life and the eventual impact on our food chain.

Social dynamics offer another avenue - discussing how spreading a rumor can damage friendships and create conflicts helps kids grasp the broader effects on the school environment.

Historical examples, like the introduction of the prickly pear cactus (Opuntia) or rabbits in Australia, show how a seemingly harmless decision can spiral into an ecological disaster. These discussions not only develop critical thinking but also help kids connect their learning to the world around them.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

And here’s a fun, short game to play:

The Cause-Effect Chain: Start with two completely unrelated events, and challenge your child (or students) to create a logical chain connecting them. For example:

Fork fell – Oliver took first place in a bike race.

The game’s goal is to fill in several gaps in between to connect the two events creatively. Maybe the sound of the fork falling startled Oliver, making him jump up and realize he was late for the race, which led to him hurrying and using all his energy to win!

Or: The fork fell off the table in a nearby café, where Oliver’s main competitor was having breakfast. The clatter startled the competitor, who accidentally spilled juice all over his race uniform. Flustered and frustrated, the competitor had to rush home to change, causing him to miss the start of the race. Without his biggest rival on the track, Oliver had a clear shot and took first place.

This exercise not only strengthens their ability to see connections between events but also nurtures creativity in problem-solving. Next time we will talk more about both creativity and problem-solving!

Yet Another Skills I understand that my influence on the "end result" (if there could be one) is just a part of the equation, but I still want to do everything I can to help my children and students succeed. By "succeed," I mean enabling them to self-actualize, become good people, and contribute positively to society. To achieve this, we need to identify the key qualities or skills we want to develop. This is where I often get stuck - what should we prioritize?

Balancing work, family, and all other responsibilities can make it seem almost impossible to nurture creativity, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and all those other essential skills - or even to keep them all in mind.

To simplify this for myself and, hopefully, for you too, I’ve created this framework. I appreciate frameworks because they break down complex tasks into manageable parts and ensure that nothing important is overlooked.

I use this one when I plan my lessons or spend time with my own kids, and before long, you'll find yourself keeping it in the back of your mind automatically.

</line>

Think about those times when you're planning a family outing, helping with homework, or just talking about your day. These are perfect moments to weave in these five elements. Let’s see how it works on a simple example: Planning a Family Outing.

Mind: Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving

Involve your children in planning the outing. Ask them questions like, "What activities can we do that everyone will enjoy?" and "How can we get there efficiently?" This encourages them to think critically and solve problems.

Heart: Emotional Intelligence and Empathy

During the outing, encourage your children to express their feelings about the activities. Ask them to consider how others in the family feel about the plans. This helps them understand and manage emotions, as well as develop empathy.

Voice: Communication and Teamwork

Assign roles for the outing – someone can be the navigator, another can be in charge of snacks, etc. This fosters teamwork and requires clear communication. Encourage active listening by asking everyone to share their thoughts and suggestions.

Growth: Growth Mindset and Curiosity

Encourage a growth mindset by framing challenges as opportunities to learn. For example, if something doesn't go as planned, discuss what can be learned from the experience. Foster curiosity by exploring new places and asking questions like, "What do you think we'll discover here?"

Knowledge: Academic Subjects and Key Concepts

Incorporate educational elements into the outing. If you’re visiting a museum, discuss the historical or scientific significance of exhibits. Going for a hike can also be a learning experience; talk about the geology of the area, the types of rocks and minerals you find, or the history of the landscape. Even a trip to a local farmer's market can be educational; discuss the economics of local vs. imported goods, the benefits of buying fresh produce, or the science behind how different foods are grown.

A Trip to the Park

Let’s take a simple trip to the park and see how each pillar of the framework can be integrated:

Mind: Ask your child to plan the route to the park using a map. Discuss the different paths and let them decide the best one.

Heart: Encourage your child to talk about their favorite activities at the park and ask them to consider what you, their siblings or friends might enjoy as well.

Voice: Assign tasks like packing a picnic or bringing games. This encourages communication and teamwork.

Growth: If it starts to rain, discuss how this is an opportunity to learn and adapt. Maybe the outing becomes an indoor activity instead.

Knowledge: While at the park, identify different plants, birds, or insects and discuss their characteristics. This enhances their knowledge in natural sciences.

This framework is not just for younger kids; it can be adapted for older children and integrated into school curricula as well.

Using this model has made it much easier for me to turn everyday moments into opportunities for growth and learning. Learning should be natural and enjoyable part of life, and it breaks my heart to see that with age a lot of kids loose their sense of wonder and curiosity, but this is a topic for another conversation.

So, next time you’re heading out the door, remember that every outing – whether it’s a trip to the park, a hike, or even a visit to the grocery store – is an opportunity to help your child grow and to build a stronger bond between you.

Wondering Minds

Hello, dear Wonderers!

Olya

Hello, dear Wonderers! I decided to start this page because I have a lot of insights, discoveries, and reflections to share. More importantly, I want to hear from you – what resonates, what works, and what doesn’t, as well as your own experiences.

Let’s take a step back to give you a better idea of who I am. In my younger years, I dreamt of traveling to remote corners of our planet, marveling at small wonders, and constantly learning new things. Then, fairly early in life, I had children, and that truly was a whole new universe.

Thanks for reading Olya’s Substack! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

Through them, I rediscovered the world, gained a better understanding of myself, and decided to focus on education. It seemed to me (and research backed this up) that creative and critical thinking, problem-solving – in short, metacognitive skills – were what modern kids were lacking and what schools typically didn’t teach.

Thus, open-ended problems, lateral thinking, imaginative techniques, cognitive biases, SMART goals, and effective learning strategies became my trusty companions. And they still are! I’ve developed numerous courses and taught both in-person and online. But lately, I’ve been increasingly concerned about the state of society – our disconnection, the lack of hope for a bright future, the need to always be right, and the inability to listen and understand one another. We can’t live without each other, yet cognitive biases like black-and-white thinking, stereotyping, confirmation bias, and the availability heuristic keep us apart.

In a world that often feels rushed and fragmented, developing strong thinking skills is not just about achieving success. It is about fostering kindness, understanding, and a genuine desire to listen to one another. It is about building a community where empathy and curiosity coexist harmoniously. I feel that we need to rediscover our core values, what binds us together as a society, and what kind of future we want to build. If we don’t take the time to reflect on these fundamental questions, the future may indeed be bleak. Our collective vision and shared values are what will guide us towards a brighter, more cohesive world.

Modern schools and higher education aren’t helping much yet. But nothing stops us from creating institutions and systems that truly meet our needs. Our society has achieved a lot, and if something isn’t working, we don’t need to throw it away entirely – we can take the best parts, change what doesn’t work, and move forward.

So! First, I decided to start with myself – to go back to school, to speak up louder, not fearing misunderstanding or offending someone, and to genuinely try to participate in positive changes. Second, I want to share my observations and useful resources here.

This may all sound a bit childish, but who cares? We often criticize ourselves more than we analyze, but the most important thing is to take action.

Let’s make this journey together. Welcome to Wondering Minds, where we explore the power of thinking to create a kinder, more connected world.

Thanks for reading Olya’s Substack!
